technically the sentence doesn't have a tense (there's no verb), granted I might be taking too much liberty with this translation but the alternative isn't any prettier

كان ذاك الفندق قريبا جدا من البحيرة
implies that the hotel isn't close to the lake anymore, which doesn't make much sense to me...
