Does the French version have both meanings of "to call by phone" and "to write a letter?" There is a shift in meaning between the English/Japanese (letter) and the German (telephone).

The French sentence is about a phone call

You can re-link the English sentence. "Drop me a line" is used, in modern English, to refer to any sort of communication. Although it used to be letters only the usage has now changed.
