This is very interesting. May I ask why you didn't use the kanji for 'yameta'? I am guessing maybe your furigana came out as 'tometa', and this was the only way to fix it?

To all appearance, this sentence originates from Tanaka Corpus and wasn't edited since then. So we'll never know why the Kanji wasn't used, I'm afraid. :-) I suspect, it's possible that Hiragana was used to prevent mixing different readings of 止めた.
