Hmm, that's a good question. I've never been sure on that, since the quantity of birds is plural, but there's only one "lot". Googling it, I just find lots of people arguing over which is correct. So I don't really know...

I agree, CK. The countable/non-countable nouns distinction makes sense.

By the way, the Esperanto phrase uses past tense.

(but the Polish one uses present tense)

@Aleksej: I see now that you're right about the past tense. But now that someone has added a Polish translation that uses present tense, I'm not sure how I could fix this.
