Sorry that I keep disagreeing with you of late, CK, but here again I don't see the reason for such a change. Why would you place the question mark inside the quotes, when it applies to the whole sentence?
It is, indeed, a difference between customs on either side of the Atlantic. American style guides suggest placing punctuation marks inside the quotation marks even though they aren't part of the actual quote.
I once read that the custom stems from typewriters where placing full stops and commas directly after a quotation mark simply looked too awkward.
American style has that rule...?
Ugh... I guess this would count as a case where I'll use "British English". It looks too ugly inside the quotation marks for me.
