**Linking/unlinking in the new sentence design**

The link feature is ready to be tested on the dev website. As usual, we will need some people to test it and report issues they may encounter.

https://dev.tatoeba.org/

This feature is only available to advanced contributors. If you are not advanced contributor on the dev website and would like to test, let me know and I will change your status.

I would also like to mention that there is only one feature left to implement in the new sentence design: the reviews. Shortly after the reviews are implemented, we will switch to the new sentence design.

We will still keep the possibility to switch back to the old sentence design via an option in the settings. This option will be available for a few weeks only, just enough time for us to ensure the features of the old sentence design have been covered properly in the new design. Then we will completely remove the old design.

So you have until then to let us know if the new design is missing anything from the old design that impacts your experience on Tatoeba. We will do our best to find a solution before we remove the old design.

Thank you!

I don't think it's possible to copy and paste a sentence's URL to create a link.

This feature was indeed removed but you can re-link a sentence by copy-pasting the text and adding it as a translation.

I guess some could argue that "translating" and "linking" are two different goals, that "Translating" a sentence by copying another one feels odd, and that being prompted with a warning when doing some legit operation is confusing. "It's a duplicate so only the link was created? Yeah, I know, thank you. Hopefully, there will never be any different warning, because I will certainly not check it all the time."

Other than that, I can't stop feeling that the space for one translation is very tall. Lastly, the scissors icon is really huge. ^^

Linking / Unlinking a sentence expands the hidden translations block. A bug that is already reported, I believe.

Other than that, the function in itself seems working as intended.

I'd say it's two different use cases but it's the same goal: you want to add a translation.

Linking to another sentence by entering a number is a more technical and geeky approach. You could be entering the wrong ID and it wouldn't be easy to notice till you submit and realize the text of the linked sentence is not what you expected it to be.

> being prompted with a warning when doing some legit operation

Indeed. I replaced the warning with a tooltip that appears when hovering over the translation text.

> I can't stop feeling that the space for one translation is very tall

That's because the icons are bigger than in the old design and have more space around them. It's a criteria for better usability on mobile devices.

We could increase the font size from 16px to 18px to compensate for the overwhelming negative space above and below the translation text, but it will amplify the feeling that the column for displaying the text is too tight. I would leave it at 16px this for now.

> Lastly, the scissors icon is really huge.

I replaced it with another icon:

> Linking / Unlinking a sentence expands the hidden translations block.

This should be fixed.

I always link to another sentence by copying in its URL rather than entering its number. Yes, this is a technical and geeky approach, but it's quick (right-click on icon, select "Copy link") and does not risk getting the ID wrong. I don't have a problem with our offering geeky approaches as long as we also offer non-geeky approaches.

If we didn't have the "copy sentence" button, I would be very opposed to getting rid of the link button. With that button, copying is easy (though one needs to be geeky enough to either guess what the copy button is originally or figure it out), so it's not as big a deal.

No, but it changed. You now need to click on the "expand menu" button to show the link/unlink buttons.

What's the motivation to double the number of clicks? Saving space at first sight (that can maybe saved another way)?

Yes, it's about saving space but more importantly to avoid overloading the sentence component in its basic form. The link feature is a feature for advanced users, so I think it does make sense to have it in the "extended" form of the sentence component.

Note that for someone who is on a mass-linking session, the number of clicks wouldn't really be doubled because they can click the button in the toolbar to expand all menus. The menu (and the link/unlink buttons) will remain displayed when browsing from page to page.
