America > United States

Eldad Eldad September 15, 2012 September 15, 2012 at 9:31:43 PM UTC link 永久链接

Ĉu ne estas originala frazo/paragrafo, nome, citaĵo?

>It was submitted by someone who incorrectly assumes that the word "America" doesn't refer to the "United States of America."

America refers to a continent. It cannot refer to a country, especially for US citizens of Mexican origin, who find it insulting that their continent is thus negated. US citizens of Mexican or other American countries descent also have a right to their own definition of what America is, including in English.

Besides, Amikema's translation is a perfect retranslation of the esperanto sentence and I cannot see why retranslations should be deleted...

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 17, 2012 November 17, 2012 at 11:11:47 PM UTC link 永久链接

No, I refer to how US citizens of Mexican descent refer, in English, to the United States of America.

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 17, 2012 November 17, 2012 at 11:15:11 PM UTC link 永久链接

The use of "America" by old white US colonists to mean only their country, as if America was entirely theirs is demeaning to hundreds of millions of other Americans, and an insult to geographical common sense.

>I'm not going to argue this further with you.

but that's precisely what you're doing !?

>when referring to a single continent we use North America or South America.

So "America" is contained in "North America" ? Yeah, sure...

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 17, 2012 November 17, 2012 at 11:41:42 PM UTC link 永久链接

>The English word "America" is most often understood as meaning the country "the United States of America."

Not by : Spanish speakers, Portugese speakers, French speakers and Canadians. That's just 2 thirds of the population of America...
Don't you constantly argue that when the majority says something, it has to be right ? Or do you restrict this majority rule to only a remote area of the USA ?

Eldad Eldad November 18, 2012 November 18, 2012 at 10:10:29 AM UTC link 永久链接

@sacredceltic,

For your information, the word "America" means "the United States of America" in several other languages than English, such as Arabic and Persian (and you'll be surprised - even in Yiddish!).

sacredceltic sacredceltic November 18, 2012 November 18, 2012 at 10:54:30 AM UTC link 永久链接

@Eldad

I know. But I think Americans themselves know better what America is. For a majority of them, the USA are but a chunk of it.

Eldad Eldad November 18, 2012 November 18, 2012 at 10:56:22 AM UTC link 永久链接

I'm sure about that.
I simply referred to the usage of the words "America" and "American".

搿则句子最早是作为句子#693520There is no such thing, at this stage of the world’s history in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dare write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my papers, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.额翻译添加额。
