From my limited knowledge of Russian, I would think that the sentence could be translated with the equivalent of "gulf" being either definite ("The gulf divided him from them"; "La golfo disgis lin disde ili") or indefinite ("A gulf divided him from them"; "Golfo disigis lin disde ili"). If this is true, then those additional two sentences should be added. Care should also be taken not to create too many links (and the bad ones that have already been created should be broken), because "The gulf divided him from them" is not equivalent to "A gulf divided him from them", even if they are valid alternative translations of the same Russian sentence. The same is true for the corresponding Esperanto sentences.
You are right, Alan.
A gulf divided him from them. - От них его отделял залив.
The gulf divided him from them. - Залив отделял его от них.
Although in Russian the difference is not so great.
Unlinking from №284497.
Ah, so these sentences use word order to indicate whether the noun has already been introduced into the conversation. Interesting!
Exactly!
E.g.
A cat was sitting on the chair. - На стуле сидела кошка.
The cat was sitting on the chair. - Кошка сидела на стуле.
