Is it OK to translate кавап as шашлык?

As far as I understand, "kebab" is a more generic name than "шашлык". To further complicate the matter, Belarusian (and Russian) have loanwords "кебаб", that usually means some other kind of kebab.

I think in Europe it's more generic, due to all the Döner stands/shops that sell "kebab" (I don't know if those have spread to where you are, but I would guess that they have).

In the U.S., I believe that kebab is generally interpreted as "meat on a stick", which is the meaning we want. The full word is "shishkebab", but I think most people would just use the shortened version.

IMO, it's completely fine to translate it as "kebab". It may be ambiguous sometimes in some places, but generally I think it's okay. Especially in this context, since you'd never order "twenty kebabs" if they weren't shishkebabs...

Okay, I read the wiki. I guess it's much more generic in the Middle East as well.

I added the alternate translation that is more specific, but both are fine, IMO.
