Your suggestion makes perfect sense. In the future I need to find some way to ease collaboration between pair or group of user, in order to ease this kind of "in two steps" (discussion and then sentence/translation) contributions.

Well after if it's a "micro-cultural" convention , I think it's up to the author to be able to justify the use of it. For some language as French there's an authority to rule what is the standard usage of words, and so for them we'll stick to the "standard" usage as the goal of Tatoeba, like for wikipedia, is to state things that are already quite accepted not to state "current evolution of the language".

Of course after as for languages at the opposite of the "scientific" knowledge of Wikipedia, it's more difficult to present evidence (as for example the language can be only oral or have very few document accessible from the Internet), I think if the author is not able to provide document to support his version/meaning and is invoking this reason. Then I think it's up to a COMMON decision of the corpus maintainers to make the final decision

(after for this last point it's not already stated cleary in the rules and "how works tatoeba" document, I'll take time during my vacation to redact them in a much more precise way)

I also think that for these micro-cultural convention a "serious" contributors should precise it in the comments like "Note on usage: in some groups of youth in the north of San Francisco it can mean this or that"

sysko sysko December 13, 2012 December 13, 2012 at 6:53:04 PM UTC link Permalink

If even in a very rare context/situation the sentence could have meant something, even if that was not the author original meaning when he add the sentence, then the translation is totally acceptable , of course it's better if the translator explain in which "context" he has translated the sentence

for example

They can fish.

can both mean "They are able to fish" or "They put fish inside cans"

(maybe not the most "natural example" but you get what I mean)

I've also updated the user Citrine and Sudajaengi to the status of advanced contributors (I should have done that for a long, I'm finishing to go through my list of "to treat" private messages and I will go trough my list of email)

[I've deleted some post there as it was starting to be irrelevant and outside of the topic itself]

Hello,

I do understand that you considered that this user was "inactiv" but I think for the sake of doing no exception to the rules, we should still stick to the rule, in the future (well I know i'm always saying 'in the future, but i've made really huge progress on the code, but it's all about the 'beside' so nothing yet showable but soon ...) I'll improve the tools for moderator to make it easier to follow this rule AND to not "lose trace" of this sentences.

I'm sure you've understood, and in the future we will all keep applying this rule in any case, though sometimes we may be tempted to do some exception for "good reason" (i.e improving faster the quality of the corpus etc.)

sysko sysko December 8, 2012 December 8, 2012 at 4:01:41 PM UTC link Permalink

Thanks to the user jarojuda we now have audio recordings in Polish

I think some, In the future the comment will have the same behaviour as wall messages (i.e not being able to delete if someone has replied)

sysko sysko December 5, 2012 December 5, 2012 at 6:47:47 PM UTC link Permalink

after for the following comments

This flood of account has actually a very limited "bad effect" on Tatoeba if any, and putting a captcha will maybe limit the threat, but once again which threat?

sysko sysko December 5, 2012 December 5, 2012 at 6:44:59 PM UTC link Permalink

I'm taking care of it right now.

sysko sysko November 30, 2012 November 30, 2012 at 6:26:41 PM UTC link Permalink
