Hm, c'est peut-être une erreur de ma part, mais ne serait-ce pas plutôt "j'avais pour habitude de boire de la bière" ?
Il y a une nuance entre les deux je crois ?

(ta phrase me semble en fait être la traduction de "I was used to drinking beer")

Hm aussi, je pense qu'on peut même carrément traduire :
"Je buvais de la bière."

"Used to" s'emploie pour parler de faits ou d'habitudes passées qui ne se produisent plus maintenant mais qui étaient un état permanent à une certaine époque.
Quand on ajoute un contexte, un "temps" où un "lieu" à la phrase (ex.: 'avant mon opération...') on entend mieux la nuance, je pense.
