Is this proverb really used? Google returns about 150 results, and it's too few. Any alternatives?
(“Brandishing fists after the fight never proves anyone’s might” is closer to the Ukrainian sense, but it seems to be found only on the Russian pages titled “English proverbs” ^^)

If you search on Yahoo.co.jp instead of Google and only search on "after the horse has bolted" there are an estimated 41,000 hits. As you can see there are also several variants, and it's often used in incomplete form, so just searching on on variant doesn't return many hits.
Having suffered damage, close the doors.
