This noun is in the indefinite form: "a big family". In Persian, the indefinite form of nouns (or noun phrases) (called نکره in Persian as opposed to معرفه [definite]) is formed using "یک" or "ی" (equivalent to the indefinite article "a" in English).

If I understood you correctly, we could also have the following sentence with the same meaning:
او یک خانوادهی بزرگ دارد.
