Well, I was just trying to adapt a sentence from gg5: さおを立てる erect a pole, seeing that 竿 was not used anywhere. I know that edict has penis as a possible translation. Don't know how much of a double entendre there is in this sentence. Could change it a bit.
> Don't know how much of a double entendre there is in this

Probably not that much - it was combining it with the back-ache that did it for me. :-)
Anyway, I think the original version would have been more like
一日中、竿を立てたため、腰が痛くなりました。
My back hurts because I've been fishing all day.
[lit. holding up (fishing) poles all day]
