hallo vs hello, what's the difference?
They mean the same thing, but "Hello" is much, much more common.

Pretty sure 'hallo' would now be associated with specific regions and/or vocations, even if originally 'hallo' and 'hello' were simply phonetic variations of the same greeting. That's what I had in mind.
