I'm not a native, but 暑假 is "summer vacation", and it is not in plural. Personally, I would use 那是什么 in a phrase like this one.

"holiday" means "假期" .
"暑假" means "summer vacation for the students".

It's no grammar mistake in "它们是什么？".
