Please check the Japanese to see if the writer is male or female.
In English "it" will not do.

I don't think the Japanese sentence specifies a gender for the writer, but you might want to check with someone who knows more Japanese than I do. :P

Anyway, you could change it to something like "He doesn't think the writer is great." without changing the meaning too much.
