Borocasli just pirated Tatoeba's address book. I just received a series of spams directly at my email address (which I never gave to him) from futbolguzeldir@hotmail.com with name Bora Can ASLI
What a nuisance!

Oh my... :/
His newest sock puppet name is "directtrue".
I hope there is (or will be) an easy way of deleting that user and his additions to the database at once.

Well, it took hours to sysko to repair the mess he caused the last time.
Sounds like this brat has nothing better to do than target us.

Hello, I am Pierre, new here.
I found the idea great !
However it appears to be a huge task ...
and a lazy bones I am...
Did you consider the possibility to import sentences extracted from books free of author rights ? (it could be even possible to import the related translated sentences).

Hi, Pierre and welcome! http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/547011
Many contributors choose indeed to copy selected sentences from books but this has many failings:
1) Book translations are sometimes inaccurate. Books are not translated on a per sentence basis, generally and book translators also have their failings.
The best example is the Bible which is absolutely full of successive dramatic translation errors that have shaped modern religions.
2) Importing sentences from scanned books (from Google Books, for instance), also imports scanning errors, and there are a lot (absence of accents, wrong split of words at the end of lines, etc.)
3) Books do not reflect spoken language, in general.
Also, translating sentences is an enjoyable form of art and a good sport for the brain.
You may read more from the project's creator here http://blog.tatoeba.org/2010/02...n-tatoeba.html

What have you discovered?

la surprise ne va pas tarder...patience !

"Die Überraschung wird nicht auf sich warten lassen... Geduld !" - Wie poetisch!

Why you care for "native" ? everybody is native.

Well, there is a problem with determinig who is ‘native’... With my parents, I speak Russian (though heavily influenced by Belarusian) and Ukrainian (though heavily influenced by Russian). In the end, I turn up a native of Belarusian in the list... Well, I don’t really mind... ^^"

Must be good to speak to grown-ups, from time to time...

Yeah, you should try it for once.

Oh did you?

auf was beziehst du dich hier?

You should rephrase your note "I haven't included anyone as a native speaker of languages that don't have native speakers: Esperanto, Klingon, Latin, Toki Pona, Lojban, Volapük,... ", because at least Esperanto has native speakers, of course. I'm not aware of anyone of them working here on Tatoeba, but there are one or two thousands of them on the planet.
But they wouldn't appear on the list, perhaps, as they're all bilingual and since you only take into account *one* native language, you'd probably choose the other one (which usually *is* the stronger language for that person).
But your note makes it look as if Esperanto had no native speakers.

and it is ridiculous to pretend not being able to decode native languages names in Esperanto, especially since Tatoeba's user interface is translated in Esperanto.
Anyway, as there are a number of contributors who wrote their profile in esperanto, that distorts the statistics which puts their very object into question...

Correct. And I volunteer to help out decipher the native languages out of Esperanto-only profiles that seem too complicated and send this information further.
I don't know of any native Esperantists here on Tatoeba, though. I followed the link to see if there were any...

Kiel mi antaŭe skribis sur tiu muro, akvo http://tatoeba.org/eng/user/profile/akvo estas desnaska Kroato kaj li kontribuis la plimulton ol la kroataj frazoj sed li ne aperas sur la statistikoj de CK http://a4esl.com/temporary/tatoeba/native.html ĉar li ne skribis sian profilon en la angla...

Indeed, http://tatoeba.org/eng/user/profile/akvo is a good example.
What about a little form to fill out for each profile, so people can add their languages and proficiencies? Some language forums have that option and I quite like it. Any reason not to include this feature in Tatoeba?

Sacredceltic wrote: "We already discourage those, who don't speak English..." - And sometimes we encourage those, who don't speak esperanto yet, to start learning, he has forgotten to write. :))))
But let me speak seriously: It would be an advantage, indeed, to make some informations obligatory.
Thus we create a minimal threshold of uncomfortabilty, which has a deterrent effect on people who just want to come in and an have a look around, before they soon leave us again for ever, remaining inactive contributors purely statistically present, or in the worst case undertake some vandalistic adventures.

No comment...

Let's check this one:
http://www.lernu.net/
This language learning platform is as friendly as welcoming you always in the language which you use on your computer (if this is one of 40 languages offered there). Not bad!

it's probably quicker to go directly to this link for unidentified languages http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentence...ne/indifferent

And it's normal that sentences are created with unidentified language when the language has not yet been created. It's the normal recommended procedure.
Most recent creations are Sorbian.

Latest Contributions isn't updating, or is it just me?

what a coincidence, just before I planned to go to sleep ....

sorry for that ^^

English speakers: Currently I want to improve my writing and listening skills. So I'll help you out with Spanish if you help me out with English! I'am from Spain, so I'm a fully native Spanish speaker with Castilian accent! Send PM.

I recommend visiting ##English on the IRC network Freenode.

Thanks! I will check later.

*Thanks! I'll check it out later.

something is wrong with that list. It features sentences that ARE translated in the languages it says they're not...

Is it possible to erase favorites and how?

You can erase favorites in the same way as you create them, click on the heart (that now is grey), and that sentence will disappear from your list of favorites.

Thank you! But I would have liked the idea to erase them all together at once (having to much of them).
