Hello. The meaning of the sentence 'I thought Tom was rich' is ambiguous.
It could either be 'I thought (in the past) that Tom was (in the past) rich' or 'I thought (in the past) that Tom was (at the time I thought) rich'. Please could anyone tell me which meaning should I follow?
