Well, for me, in Spanish "¿De dónde vienes?" is about the last place you were, and is different than ""¿De dónde eres?" which is about the city/country you live or were born. Is it the same kind of distinction you're trying to do with the English sentences ?

Where are you from? -> ¿De dónde eres/sos o es Ud./son Uds.?
Where are you coming from? -> ¿De dónde vienes/venís o viene Ud./vienen Uds.?
But the opinion of a native surely were a little bit helpful.
