Public health scientist, embroiderer, Zwifter, gardener.

Some Dutch, 5 years of German (30 years ago), a couple years of Spanish.

From Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Apparently I have a bit of a US Southern (informal) style to my spoken speech, but I've been warping my brain for the last 10 years by writing scientific papers with highly formalized language.

Quality control as of August 23 2020 (not yet an advanced contributor & also writing this for my own accountability):

-I only translate from my (somewhat) known languages into English.
-I monitor responses to my sentences and comments at least daily.
-I translate partial sentences into full sentences for context (still going back to correct some of these).
-I use Google Translate but only in conjunction with sources like lists of expressions, e.g. https://www.woorden.org/spreekwoord.php or https://www.mijnwoordenboek.nl/. If Google Translate says that the Dutch saying "Ieder zijn ding" translates to "everyone his own thing", it's pretty clear that's not a good translation. I plug it into mijnwoordenboek and see it translates to "to each his own", which makes sense. If I can't find it, I don't translate it. If I'm not sure, I ask a question on the sentence's page to see if the owner knows whether the proposed translation fits.
-I ask questions when I'm not sure.
-I try to learn from my mistakes.

My goals:

-Bucket list-become a polyglot
-Become a valued member of an open-source development project
-Talk about language and vocabulary with other passionate folks
-Feel like I'm using my spare time in something useful rather than watching a lot of TV :). As @Dorenda says, Rust roest!
