I would say "was" in this sentence since it starts with "then."
For English, I'd agree with CK. The Esperanto sentence, however, will probably use the present "estas"as it is currently, since that language handles tenses a little differently in dependent clauses. To a first approximation, the world has always been a sphere and always will be; its status did not change with the discovery of tis geometry.
