женщина and 女 both mean "woman", not "girl". Unlink?
"Молодая женщина" (young woman) could cover a girl, I'm pretty sure
I don't know Russian so well, but in Hungarian we have:
lány - girl
hölgy - formal way to address a woman
asszony - woman who has a husband (may older than a hölgy, but can be the same)
nő - woman
fiatal hölgy - young woman who has no husband or a young woman who looks young even she has a child
kishölgy - (kis means little) girl in formal; or the word used by the mother, sometimes used to refer a young woman
kisasszony - young woman; or can be said by the mother when the girl didn't obey to her
hölgyemény - (humorous or rude)
asszonyság - older woman or simply an asszony, the word mainly used in dialects, outside of dialects it's homorous or rude
@AlanF_US
I also wouldn't call молодая женщина a young girl.
a young girl = (молодая) девушка
"Young lady" could be girl, but I doubt "young woman" covers "young girl" too
@nipbud Actually, referring to a person as a "young man/woman" in third person sounds stilted or fanciful somehow in Russian :o In the context, I would indeed simply translate it as девушка (youth should already be known or implied).
