That sentence doesn't work, since "encountered" is a transitive verb but there's no object. Also, it's "the Mediterranean Sea".

Google Translate gives this translation of the original Turkish:

In the 16th century, Turkish and Spanish pirates often fought each other in the Mediterranean.

Is that correct? If so, we should use it.
