You might think it's too different from the original if I added this as a translation, though I believe this is what you'd say in Japanese in the same situation. ("私と仕事、どっちが大事なの？" is a very common phrase. http://search.naver.jp/search?s...A%E3%81%AE%22) What do you think?

I'm almost certain that you won't say anything like "you have to choose" after this sentence. You just wait for the answer.

I think sentences using "選ぶ" or the like are very rare in this situation (See for example http://www.google.co.jp/search?q="仕事か私+*+選んで"), so I couldn't think of a more literal translation of Amastan's sentence.

ummmm.... yep, I'd rather wait for the answer but I'm not sure if my girlfriend would do the same. :-) I can easily imagine this monologue:
"All you do is just sitting on that damned site, you swine! What's more important, me or your Tatoeba? Hah? That does it! God's my witness, I was long on patience. Now, you have to choose: either me or Tatoeba."

私とXX、どっちが大事なの？ is a common phrase that a speaker ask people to make a choice, 私 or XX. Indeed, the literal meaning is to ask which one is more important, 私 or XX. However, to ask importance is kind of the same to make a decision which one to be chosen, isn't it? I believe most of Japanese people would assume that someone has to choose, 私 or XX when they see this sentence.
I personally think Japanese people tend to avoid speaking out. They often imply another meaning in a phrase.

個人的に、日本人はストレートな表現を避ける傾向があるのだと思います。一つの表現に別の意味を込めることはよくあることです。

bunbuku-san, I see your point. :-) Yes, English sentence "What's more important, A or B?" can imply that a person to whom it was said will make a choice between A and B and tell it to the speaker, I believe. But it also could be a rhetorical question when the answer is obvious or unrequired. Or, like in my example, it could be a part of a long emotional tirade. :-)
On the other hand, inquiring what is more important doesn't necessary mean a demand to make a choice since, for example, A may be more important for a person but in the face of making choice he will prefer to sacrifice it to B from some considerations.
