Actually it looks like 四角形 is used for both rectangle and square (although it may not be regarded as technically accurate to do so). - See eijiro.
There is also an oblique reference to this usages in リーダーズ+プラス

Yeah, I have come across this problem, since the 和独 dictionary lists several translations for the same word, thus also confusing me as to which word to choose. However, I think this imprecise way of using a word should not be replicated to learners of Japanese. I have contributed several sentences where the mathematically exact words for square, rectangle, parallelogram etc. are used.
