Do you mean a single birch tree in this sentence or you speak about birches in general?
It seems to me this sentence is more about a specific birch. I'm asking to chose the correct Russian translation.
In English, this works the same as in German. "The X" might refer to one individual, or might stand for an entire class of individuals. You decide how to read it based on context.
The example sentence is ambiguous. You could read it either way, but it's hard to imagine a real situation in which one single tree is indicated.
So, these English sentences are equivalent for most purposes:
-- The birch has white bark
-- Birches have white bark
-- Birch trees have white bark
