I'm afraid this translation is somewhat misleading due to oversimplification.

It translates directly to "we were pushing there car from behind", whereas the Japanese sentence:
1. indicates that there were two actions done: getting around the car and then pushing (車の後ろに回って押した).
2. is not in durative form (pchalismy = we were pushing = 押していた).

PS. While I must agree that it's hard to translate this one to Polish without durative (pchalismy), otherwise it sounds as if you pushed it once for a second and that's it, it should still be sth like:

Obeszlismy samochod od tylu i pchalismy.

Be it as it may, it sums up the situation quite precisely, as far as we know about it without any context, doesn't it? Anyway, your version is more literal, and not bad either. I added it as another translation.
