Si bien el verbo asechar existe, creo que acechar sería el más aproximado para lookout aunque también suena un poco exagerado.

Gracias, no era acecho y sino asecho como señalaste.
Quizás el uso es un poco metafórico. "Estar al acecho" en este contexto significa salir a buscar algo sin ser percibido y prestando atención a los detalles, que son los requisitos para atrapar a un sospechoso. La expresión "estar a la búsqueda" no es apropiada para mi porque me da la idea de que Tomás le pregunta a la gente "¿Es usted sospechoso?".
