It has been suggested that this sentence is rude and should be removed. What do others think?

jdetrey jdetrey April 1, 2010 April 1, 2010 at 10:06:54 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I tend to agree with JimBreen. Before realising this sentence actually came from Tatoeba, I was kind of surprised when I stumbled upon it in WWWJDIC!

JimBreen JimBreen April 1, 2010 April 1, 2010 at 11:52:19 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I guess I'd prefer it to be removed, or rewritten. It doesn't offend me, but it's the sort of thing that can put people off using the sentences for educational purposes.

or at least we can put this kind of sentences in a special section, not accessible to everyone

I concur: while I personally don't care, this sentence would obviously not be suitable in educational material. There seems to be a 'XXX' annotation in the Tanaka corpus, couldn't this sentence simply be tagged accordingly?

JimBreen JimBreen September 9, 2013 September 9, 2013 at 10:47:30 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Let's change アソコ to 信号旗 and adjust the English. Do you agree, Mookeee? Otherwise I'll set up a new pair and use them in WWWJDIC. I think it's the only sentence using that sense of アソコ.

Wouldn't such a change actually be detrimental to the breadth of the corpus? While it's understandable that some institutions would want to abstain from using this sentence, it is still a valid (and only) example of an existing dictionary word...

WestofEden WestofEden September 9, 2013 September 9, 2013 at 5:27:21 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I see many sentences tagged "not for WWWJDIC", so isn't it possible to simply remove this sentence from your website? Also, I think we should have a discussion concerning any censorship for moral purposes. I know that Australia has strict moral standards, with pornography and violent video games being banned in many areas, but since this website is international, I think that not everyone has the same moral conceptions. Also, it would be interesting to have an option to hide X-rated sentences from the website for users that want it.

JimBreen JimBreen September 11, 2013 September 11, 2013 at 1:53:25 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I have added another sentence pair with a less confronting use of 彼処, and made that one the main example for WWWJDIC (the other is still there, but you need to ask to see it.
BTW, Australia's laws on pornography are pretty relaxed - you can get whatever you want if you are over 18 (apart from child-exploitation). Super-violent films and games are banned, but then they are in most places.

WestofEden WestofEden September 11, 2013 September 11, 2013 at 2:32:40 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I think it depends on where you are in Australia. And Australia often bans movies or games that enjoy a pretty wide distribution outside of Australia. (http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/polic...14-10b9e.html)

Can we tag this sentence somehow, to note that it might be inappropriate for general educational use?

JimBreen JimBreen March 4, 2014 March 4, 2014 at 11:23:30 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

For WWWJDIC I have added another sentence which is the same as this one but with 信号旗 instead of アソコ, and I have removed this one from the ones used by WWWJDIC. Perhaps someone would like to tag this as "rude" or something like that.
