On the statistics page of all contributors, it would be nice if one could restrict the list to the contributors of a certain language.

Hi. I have a question about strangely formed chinese sentences, like this ones:

I believe it is some bug of former versions of Tatoeba? I'm facing such sentences very often - almost one of every three sentences.
Does new versions of Tatoeba will fix it? Or somebody (may be me?) should fix it manually? If so - what should I do to gain an access to fix it?
Possibly some sort of encoding / IME problem?
You could start a list

and call it "[@moderator] Encoding problem/mojibake" or something. That way it would be easier to find them later to fix them.

I've also found some Chinese sentences that have no transliteration at all, nor simplified version, such as:

Could you go through the tags and change all the invalid tags to something that works?
e.g. "archaic?" -> "possibly archaic"
"@due on 09/30" -> "@due on 09-30"
etc.
Or fix it so they work. ;-)

Do mods get a special alert every time a new duplicate is created? Cause that would be pretty cool...

not difficult, too long in the current architecture, so yep if we were able to warn "real time" mod, we will be able to merge on the fly ^^, or make whatever action. You can imagine I wouldn't spend time maintenaning the mythic remove duplicate script ^^
But fortunately the database Zmoo of sthooka project has created, and upon which we will build the new tatoeba, is able to detect them on the fly. So what you've said will be possible in the new version.
And not just for the mods, I hope, but for everybody.
What would be really awesome is that when you submitted a sentence, you could get a warning that was something like:
"The sentence you are submitting is 93% similar to ######. Please make sure that your submission is necessary."
Does anyone know why in order to post your real name in the profile you have to reveal your birthdate?

If you want to indicate your name without indicating your birthdate (even a false one), you can "unset" your birthdate by indicating an impossible date, like February 31st (but yea that's a hack).

Etant donné le grand nombre d'espérantistes qui sont nouvellement arrivés sur Tatoeba, de nombreux problèmes se posent parce qu'aucun modérateur n'est espérantiste et la plupart d'entre eux ne parlent pas anglais ou français, russe, japonais ou chinois qui sont les langues principales connues des modérateurs. La situation n'est pas tenable. Il y a de nombreux contributeurs qui traduisent des langues qu'ils ne comprennent pas parce qu'ils ne comprennent pas les principes de Tatoeba et n'ont pas lu ou ne savent pas lire les instructions.
Il est donc non seulement urgent d'afficher les instructions en espéranto mais aussi d'enrôler des modérateurs espérantophones.
BTW j'ai vu que maintenant on a une traduction de la guide en espéranto. Ça devrait aider!
comme je disais, c'est super et je vais pouvoir les renvoyer à cette référence, mais tu sais bien que ça suffit pas, il faut donner des explications à ceux qui ne lisent pas ou bien n'ont pas compris malgré la lecture. Il y en a, tu es obligé de ré-expliquer en détail plusieurs fois...Demande à Muiriel qui a eu cette expérience récemment...
Peut-être un simple système pourrait aider: numéroter les réponses, que vous devez répéter souvent, les mettre en internet et (gentiment) inviter les "pécheurs" à lire ce numéro. Cela les inviterait à lire aussi les autres numéros.
Et je vois que le problème le plus fréquent ce sont les gens qui traduisent depuis une langue qui n'est pas celle qu'ils voulaient traduire.
Je fais la proposition suivante à sysko: Tout nouvel utilisateur devrait avoir une sorte de compteur, mettons pour les 20 premières traductions qu'il effectue. Pour ces premières traductions, un pop-up/message serait surimprimé lorsqu'ils cliqueraient sur le bouton de traduction, en indiquant: "Vous vous apprêtez à traduire cette phrase depuis la langue xxxx. Est-ce bien une langue que vous connaissez et que vous voulez traduire ? Sinon, merci d'annuler et de cliquer sur la version de la phrase dans la langue que vous voulez traduire, afin de la sélectionner (elle doit apparaître en premier) avant de cliquer de nouveau sur le bouton de traduction. Tatoeba est un système de traduction d'une langue à l'autre <lien vers plus d'explication dans le guide du contributeur>"
Puis, au bout de 20 traductions, le message n'apparaîtrait plus et ne risquerait pas d'ennuyer les traducteurs déjà avertis.
Je crois que ça aiderait beaucoup...
Des mécanismes pour accompagner les utilisateurs, et en particulier les nouveaux venus, ont déjà été envisagés depuis un certain temps. Mais à l'époque où le cercle de contributeurs actifs, ainsi que la diversité des contributions en termes de langues, étaient relativement restreints, l'on avait surtout privilégié la liberté et le contact direct avec les contributeurs pour se constituer un noyau solide.
Actuellement, le problème se situe surtout au niveau des priorités et du manque de ressources.

In fact, I'd been so inundated with comment notifications on a particular sentence that I missed an important comment on another.
Well, we could send a private message instead of an email. In the absolute it wouldn't be too much work, but to be honest we have so many other priorities, we won't be able to take care of this... You'll have to stick with email notification for at least another few months, sorry :S
In general, further development of this version of Tatoeba has slowed down a lot since the last couple of months. Any new features will rather be part of the new version (for which we don't have a release date yet).
