For this unfortunately we're using an external plugin to provide this behavior , by the past I've tried to modify this behavior but the code is a little bit complex (and spaghetti-like)

The Server was done this last hour due to some change in the configuration of the server I've made.

Now the server should be more stable and a little faster (actually some bots were scanning the website regardless of the robot.txt and well other technical stuff)

Sorry for the down time of these days.

Yep I was going to talk about it. The database server has stopped yesterday and for some reason didn't restarted. So as the website server itself was still there, Tatoeba was accessible but with no data. And as I was away from any internet connection yesterday, The problem has last enough long to be viewed.

Actually there was a debate one year ago something like that about the tags, when Trang chose Swift to be the moderator that will take care of the tag clean-up

After as you said yourself, those you consider as being dictator are only a minority, so there's no reason to be fatalist and declare the tags dead. If you think there's a need to (re)open the debate about rules we all (or a majority among the trusted users) agree, especially for this OK tag, I would not stop you from starting a thread about this.

sysko sysko December 30, 2011 December 30, 2011 at 4:49:31 PM UTC link Permalink

I don't have the times to answers to all your points, sorry for this, but for the OK tags you've quoted, at least for these two examples I don't think there's an abuse, let me explain why

As you can see the sentence was added at "unknow time", it's a sentence from the takana corpus, so not added by CK

CK has tagged them OK and then has owned it , because at the opposite of tags, the owner is always displayed , in search results, in random sentences etc. so if someone trust CK, he know he can trust the sentence (so after up to everyone to trust those they want)

So though it may be misleading as now CK is displayed as the owner, he was not the original author, and by consequence can to my opinion legitimately tag it as OK.

et maintenant ?

sysko sysko December 26, 2011 December 26, 2011 at 5:26:10 PM UTC link Permalink

the auto-detection is currently off because we were relying on a google API that has been closed. I'm on the way to produce our own auto-detection system, but waiting for this, users have to specify manually the language (note that it keeps the last language you've contributed in)

sorry for this problem.

I need to add that universal subtitle script is what we use for the video in the main page of tatoeba for non-connected user.

sysko sysko December 14, 2011 December 14, 2011 at 1:06:48 PM UTC link Permalink

Using http://www.universalsubtitles.org/en/database, it's still can worth it to have some kind of application that diplay on two column the sub and its translation and let a user quickly "validate" those who match a sentence level, could be a good comprromise ?

For open subtitles, script of movies are themselves protected by copyright, the same as for a book you have both the text itself and the way the editor has chosen to cut the paragraph, the font etc. which are also protected. So though it is "open" in the sense of "they ease reuse by other" I think they are on a grey line in term of copyright.

http://static.tatoeba.org/missing_words_por.html
http://static.tatoeba.org/missing_words_fra.html

Actually I've been providing two free/open source list of words (actually by word understand morpheme, cat and cats being two 'words', my script is rather stupid yet) for this two languages so now I've made a script to download the sentences dump and to find which one are still missing

If people provide me file for an other language I can of course generate list for other languages.

[Eng] The idea seems interesting, though I'm still not sure what to think about it. So I let you debate about it and if we get a clear answer from most of major contributors (though have the opinion of some newbies can also be a good thing), I will adapt tatoeba accordingly.

I've finally found time to generate (and currently executing) duplication removal script, and I've updated the list of missing word in french and portuguese

still need to find time to update search engine for last week though
