Hi!
Is there a list of most important sentences? Kinda
phrasebook.

Hi,gleki!
Various lists you can find here: http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences_lists/index

I don't know, wether there is a list of the most important sentences. I myself didn't find one.
A good question is: What is important, and what is important for you? So maybe the best solution will be, if you create this list yourself. This would be really great.

He is probably asking for a collection of sentences that covers either the most basic(the most used) English vocabulary or grammar.

I remember using something like that for learning my first 500 English words or so. And there was a book written in the most unnatural bare bones English which was actually pretty helpful to me.

Yes, I'm talking about that. It'd be pretty nice to have not more than ~1000 most important sentences but in all languages.

I agree.
I don't want to offend anyone, but Tatoeba as is can't be very helpful for people who have just started.

I know I should set up a sphinx myself and look for those sentences. But it seems like a lot of job and I don't know how much stress using a script to add those sentences to my list would give to the tatoeba server.

Any tech genius willing to do the heavy lifting out there?

Hi,

I'm sure you didn't offend anyone. Although Tatoeba can be used by beginners (they can search sentences and get translations in the language they want), it can't be used as a conventional language learning tool.

A list like the one requested by gleki would be helpful, but I don't think anyone is willing to go through 345,000+ sentences to select, let's say, a thousand of them. It would be smarter if a native speaker created a list of 'basic' sentences and brought it to Tatoeba. Then everybody would be able to translate it. If there are repeated sentences, they'll eventually get merged.

There's a problem, though. What is a basic sentence? There are some structures that are basic in English but quite complex in Portuguese (and vice-versa). Although translation is always welcome, it would be better if every language had its own sentences for beginners.

That means that we would have to recruit native speakers to think about this work and get their hands dirty, and this is a tough process. Worth trying, though.

Well, it's better to take some basic list, import it into tatoeba using some script, then merge duplicates and make this list public and non-editable. Then we can start advertising it (or them, as I'm sure we'll have several such lists). Others will simply translate those lists by bookmarking translations to their private lists and publishing links to them.
