
The tense doesn’t match with the Japanese.

I guess your German translations doesn't match the Japanese, either. "商売の経験がある" only means that he has (once) done business, even for a short period of time. English and German sentences all mean that he was rich in experience, don't they? These would be translated as "彼は商売(の)経験が豊かだった" or "彼は経験豊富なビジネスマンだった".

My translation need not necessarily mean that he was rich in business experience. At least that was not what I had in mind when I wrote it. Now that I read it again, I have to admit that it seems to imply just that. I shall think of a way to modify it.
