In Finnish you can never start a sentence with "mutta" ="but". It needs another sentence in the begining. For example: Hän inhosi aikaisia aamuja, mutta hän piti lapsista ja työstään. =She/he hated early mornings, but she/he liked...
"Pitää" is a good verb for both situations, so I didn't repeat it.
You can perfectly well start a sentence with "mutta". If you absolutely abhor the thought of it, you might consider saying something like "Hän piti kuitenkin lapsista ja työstään."
