** Vocabulary list feature **

I'm happy to announce that a first draft of the vocabulary list feature (aka. "wish list" or "requests list") has been implemented and it is now testable on https://dev.tatoeba.org.

I updated the dev website to address the various points you mentioned. You can test again and see if there's anything else to fix or improve.

I can't add vocabulary items using IE or Microsoft Edge. The Add vocabulary items link redirects to the same page or to Tatoeba's home page.

I'm very glad to see this moving forward. I'll have more feedback when we get to the stage of development in which we are able to ask for vocabulary items to be translated into specific languages, and/or by specific people. But for now I do have one comment: Currently, there is no caption for the drop-down list used to indicate the language of the vocabulary item, and the selected item is empty when you land on the page. Together, these make it hard to figure out what the purpose of the drop-down is, and require the user to click on it in order to see. Filling in the field with a default language (last one used, or first one in the user's profile if the user hasn't used the feature before) would help address this, and would also get rid of the problem (reported in GitHub) where an item can be added without specifying a language. Adding a caption would also help.

Looks great! But this reminds me of a similar desire that I had for a long time. I see an interesting sentence in language A and would like to have a translation of it in language B. Until now I had to write a letter to a contributor to achieve this. A simple click "Someone is especially interested in a translation into langue B" would be very useful.

Indeed, your sentence can't be found via the search either.

TRANG TRANG June 29, 2016 June 29, 2016 at 7:40:39 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

I prefer not to make too much noise about it, since there is still a huge amount of work to do on this feature. It's better if people discover it progressively :)

Regarding your sentences not showing on the dev website, this is because the search engine is not scanning new sentences on the dev website, which is why you can't find it.
Regarding the "0 sentences", this is because the number depends on the search engine. As long as your sentence is not scanned, it's not counted.

So this behavior that you're experiencing on the dev website should hopefully not happen on the main website when the feature is released.

Ricardo14 Ricardo14 June 30, 2016 June 30, 2016 at 12:49:23 AM UTC link Lînko payîdar

Perhaps 10 sentences is not enough as far as we'd like as much sentences as possible. What if we'd let the user choose if it should be displayed 10, 20 or 30 and select 20 by default?
For beginners, writing 10 sentences with the word "world" would be really hard, but it won't be by natives. Besides, a beginner that sees 20,30 sentences with the word "world" would get satisfied and be able to study better, I think...

As far as I'm concerned, I don't think it will change much that we limit to 10, 20, 30 or any number of sentences. You could have hundreds of sentences for a certain vocabulary, and none of them are satisfying.

Keep in mind that the current implementation is only the first iteration, and there are clear limitations. The number of sentences will not be the final criteria for suggesting what vocabulary items need sentences.

Cf. my comment on GitHub for the whole picture of how the feature is going be like:

Tatoeba has been updated and the vocabulary list feature is now (finally) available on the main website :)

As said in my comment above, keep in mind that the current implementation is only the first iteration, and there are clear limitations, which I'm sure many of you will notice soon enough.

If you wish to give feedback on what could be improved, please make sure you read first all the comments on GitHub on this topic: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tatoeba2/issues/1148

Also make sure you read the guidelines about reporting issues, especially the part about focusing on describing the problem: https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...ng-the-problem

Either the "count" needs to exclude orphan sentences, or the link to the search needs to include orphan sentences. I'm not sure yet which would be best...

But it is a definitely an inconsistency that needs to be fixed.

How long does it take until the sentence count for wanted vocabulary is updated?
There are several items labeled with "0 sentences", but when you click on "0 sentences", you do get example sentences.
eg. the English "splice" has three entries.

{{vm.hiddenReplies[26687] ? 'expand_more' : 'expand_less'}} cewaban binimne cewaban bimojne
TRANG TRANG July 3, 2016 July 3, 2016 at 4:37:16 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

It depends. With the current mechanism, it can take one hour or it can take years.

The count is updated whenever someone adds a new sentences for a vocabulary item, from the page "Vocabulary that needs sentences". But this number depends on whether or not the sentence has been indexed by the search engine. The sentences are indexed every 15 minutes I think.

So in other words, if 10 people add a sentence for "splice" in the same minute, the count will remain at "0 sentences" (because it counts only sentences that are already indexed by the search engine). And if 15 minutes later someone adds another sentence for "splice", it will jump to "10 sentences".

brauchinet brauchinet July 3, 2016 July 3, 2016 at 5:58:39 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

Well, take for example [eng] Whatsapp (oldest item from the list of wanted vocabulary): here, 7 sentences are indicated, and when you click on "7 sentences" there are indeed seven, most of them old sentences from before the wishlist feature.
Take [eng] splice: 0 sentences, though there are 3 (old) sentences.
Take [eng] radically or [deu] langgliedrig: 0 sentences, though example sentences have been added via the "Vocabulary that needs sentences" page recently (and are already indexed because they're readily found by the search engine.)

{{vm.hiddenReplies[26690] ? 'expand_more' : 'expand_less'}} cewaban binimne cewaban bimojne
TRANG TRANG July 3, 2016 July 3, 2016 at 6:57:47 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

The count update is triggered only if someone adds a sentence from the "vocabulary wanted" page, and it is updated only for the selected item. Maybe the sentences containing "splice" were added for another vocabulary item, or maybe there were simply added from the "Add sentences" page. In which case, the count is *not* updated.

If you try now to add an English sentence by clicking on the "+" icon of "splice", you will normally see that the count is updated up to "3 sentences". The sentence you add doesn't even have to contain "splice".

brauchinet brauchinet July 3, 2016 July 3, 2016 at 7:35:12 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

Ah, yes.
This means the first sentence will not be counted until a second one is entered.

{{vm.hiddenReplies[26692] ? 'expand_more' : 'expand_less'}} cewaban binimne cewaban bimojne
TRANG TRANG July 3, 2016 July 3, 2016 at 8:07:15 PM UTC link Lînko payîdar

Yes, and only if the second sentence is entered after the first sentence has been indexed. If the second sentence is entered "too soon", then both sentences won't be counted, until a third sentence is added.

This is not going to be the final mechanism by the way. It's just a quick implementation so that the count gets updated somehow.

I tested the "My Vocabulary" feature on the dev site. "Add Vocabulary Items" presents a dropdown labeled "Languages" but there are no language options in it, except an empty option with a blue checkmark icon.

I hope this feature allows you to annotate the vocabulary item you're trying to add as the word "pitch," for example, has many meanings: pitch a tent, low/high pitch, black as pitch, football pitch, pitch a ball, pitch between the threads of a screw, sales pitch, pitch/slope of a roof, etc.
