We use the same word in Hebrew (i.e., the word for "fell", past tense), in the connotation of "martyr", a soldier who died defending our country etc. But in Hebrew it's often used (the only usage in this context). Is it only seldom used in German?
PS. Not the *only* usage, but rather common usage.
In my opinion it's an euphemistic expression for the fact that somebody had to die (against his will, I assume). Normally they say: "wurde(n) getötet".
