I don't really like the new Spanish flag. I think that now it's quite similar with Ladino.

How about an Israeli flag edited with the letters LAD on the side? (à la Afrikaans, Xhosa, Coastal Kadazan, etc.?).

[From the 30x20 pixel flag] Maybe the flag can be shifted 5 pixels to the left (cropping the 5 leftmost pixels), a 10x20 rectangle added on the right side (cropping the 5 rightmost pixels of the original flag) with the letters LAD written in 16x7 within the rectangle (1 pixel from the Israeli flag, 2 pixels from the right edge, and 2 pixels from either top or bottom).

Most native speakers of Bashkir, Buryat, Yakut, Mari and many other languages live in Russia, and it's no reason to use Russian flag for them. Do people who speak Ladino have their own organization that helps them to keep their cultural and language heritage? If yes, it seems logical to use the same symbol, they use there.

But there is no central organization, or standard symbol. The only other possibilities are adding unofficial flags such as:

I like the first one. It seems nice and can't be mixed up with Spanish or Hebrew flags.

I think that other people had the right to see what flag would be used instead of the former since we're all used to it.

Now I do have troubles when I see Ladin and Spanish translations together

But, we WERE able to see the flag. This change was requested by user sabretou, Ricardo14 posted a link to the ticket where CK even posted what the new flag would look like, but nobody commented.

@odexed There's even a link on my profile for all tickets I create since I take care of adding new languages = https://tatoeba.org/eng/user/profile/Ricardo14 . As far we need a symbol that would represent that properly, I let it there. So, everyone can help me to choose a proper symbol, flag for that. That said and as far as everybody knows that we use GitHub to make Tatoeba works and that everybody can comment, discuss about it, I changed it. Not just CK or cueyayotl could know about this, but everybody and I wouldn't do anything that wouldn't be good for all of us. If you all don't want me handling this any longer, just let me know and I won't take care about this anymore. It was not my intention to make something "on the shadows". ( I truly believe that @TRANG , the person who created Tatoeba, wouldn't give me this task if I was going to do things this way. ).
However, we live in a democracy that EVERYBODY can share oppinions, ask, etc. I do this on all Tatoeba days. Some of my ideas were/are rejected and others not. That's democracy and it says that nobody has to accept me as a "language handler". So, if I'm not doing a good job, if you all don't want me anymore to handle this, PM me, the Admins AND post on the wall. So, that won't be on "the shadows" (as it is now). I know that my English is not good and that might be (one) of the reasons I didn't become a CM but there's a link on my profile which lists ALL the tickets I've opened so far https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...y/RyckRichards (open and closed ones. All for languages were closed - https://github.com/Tatoeba/tato...ds+is%3Aclosed ). But as I said, nothing I did was "on the shadows" and everyone could see it/comment.
Now, it's up to ALL the Tatoeba community: Should I keep taking care of languages on Tatoeba or not? You choose.

@cueyayotl
The flag that was posted on the wall by sabretou was quite different, it was yellow bright. Anyway, not everyone uses github. I don't even have an account there.

@Ricardo14
I always appreciated your contribution and efforts and I don't have anything against you. I just left this comment because I do translate from Spanish and I found this change undesireble. Maybe other people think it's ok, I don't mind.

@odexed

I know and I REALLY thank you for that. However, it seemed that this change was made "on the shadows" which it wasn't. I always post the links to the GitHub (both for those who want to comment in there and those who want to see but comment in here). All of this in public.

@Ricardo14

When it comes to something people are used to I think we should have more time and discussions before we make the change. Maybe it could be tested on the http://dev.tatoeba.org first. I'm quite sure that a great deal of people don't use github, can't comment there and don't even know how to do it. Yes I have seen sabretou's request but I didn't think it was going to be implemented so early. And I didn't follow all comments on the issue on github, of course.

Odexed - everyone can see the ticket on GitHub and so, comment on there or here. and whenever someone make any request about request, I take care of it. Nobody needs to comment in there, but they all can comment here.

There's been a couple of times where I thought the 'Auto detect' was misidentifying the language of my sentences, but it turned out that it was just the flag that had changed.

I DO think this is the better choice, though it does feel strange to use the new flag (being as used to the old flag as I was). The shade of the Spanish flag SHOULD be dark (It's correct now.) It'll take a couple of months to get used to, but it is something I believe we WILL get used to.

As for the Ladino flag, I don't really know if it SHOULD be changed. Though CK's suggestion above is not bad at all, nor is this unofficial flag:

@odexed, I don't have a GitHub account either :) I just look there and comment here.

@Ricardo14, no way! Ever since you took over, things have really taken off! Now, we have people contributing in languages that some of us have never even heard of! :)

This is the original post I made: https://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/sh...#message_24838

I am certain it is the same flag being used now on Tatoeba.

If there is a disconnect between this flag and the other flags, it's because most of the national flags on Tatoeba specifically come from some stylised source and use fainter, duller colours than their actual flags have.

Compare the flag of France: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wi..._of_France.svg
With the flag we have on here: https://tatoeba.org/img/flags/fra.png?1395590761

You'll notice the red on the Tatoeba flag is much fainter.

I'm not sure where these fainter-coloured flags came from, but they are the oldest flags around on Tatoeba. Another pattern I notice is that those "old" flags have a grey shadow around the right and bottom edges, giving them an elevated or bevelled look. The new Spanish flag lacks this shadow, and therefore looks much flatter.

Selena777 Selena777 November 20, 2015 November 20, 2015 at 8:08:29 AM UTC link Permalink

That's the official Spanish flag https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain and I also sow it on another sites, so I guess "liking the old one more" is just a matter of habit. Using the official national flag is better solution, I think.
