Is the tense だった actually correct?
The example sentences I found in the grammar book all use だ as the main verb, but past infinitive for the verb in front of もの.
You have a good point, but it seems to be used quite a lot. That doesn't mean it's not wrong - but we should get some native Japanese input on it before deciding.
It's correct.
「~したものだった」は、「~したものだ」に比べて過去の習慣を懐かしむ話者の気持ちが表現されるものだと私は思います。
それからこの文は、「よく」を加えた方がより良い文になると思います。
「彼らはよく週末に」or「週末によく名古屋港まで」or「名古屋港までよくドライブに」or「ドライブによく行った」or「よく彼らは週末に」
@qahwaさん、
丁寧に説明してくれてありがとうございました。「よく」も入れておきました。

Not at all and thank you.

Did you understand my explanation?
I'm sorry because I can't explain in my poor English, and if I try to explain in English, it takes so much time, and I don't have the enough time.
