I think 'animal' has typically a wider sense, closer to English "animate being"?
See http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/ho...9:entry=animal - the uses 'sometimes' are restricted to mean 'beast', but usually refers to things that move or breathe, thus including humans.
Perhaps 'bestiarum' would be better?
