With Japanese, has anyone brought up making it possible to select the hiragana transcriptions of kanji with the mouse?
This would be very helpful to people who haven't mastered hiragana, like myself. Thanks!
(If most people can select them and this is on my end, please let me know.)

I advise you getting an add-on for Japanese, much better than trying to copy hiragana or copy the Japanese word to jisho.org and get the hiragana from there.
And what more, here you always have to click on every sentence to see the transcriptions. That's slow, and in the long run nerve wracking.
Work smart, not hard.

A simple way would be to install Stylus extension for Firefox or Chome and add the following user style for tatoeba.org domain:
rt { user-select: auto; }
(That would be the entirety of the user style, just this line)
After this you'll be able to select and copy the hiragana for one separate word. (It only works on separate words, not sentences. If you copy the sentence, kanji will be copied.)
(Stylus is an extension that allows to add custom CSS on certain pages, to change their appearance or sometimes to make them more accessible. It was created as a safe and privacy-respecting version of another extension with similar functionality.
Stylus for Firefox can be downloaded here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-U...addon/styl-us/
Stylus for Chrome is available here: https://chrome.google.com/webst...kjfobafhncgmne )

What is the character or word limit of a comment under a sentence?

I've never heard anyone complain about not being able to write a comment because of a character limit.

: ))

I guess Cabo means some comments are way too long.

A bit, a bit too long, yes, and I can't just click on one comment and move to the next with the arrow key, I have to scroll, and if I see a long one, I have to scroll fast. If between those long comments lie a smaller one I probably miss it, and you, too.
And I have to ask: why is it so important posting ten pages of a dictionary under a bunch of sentences?

I agree.

🍎 There are almost 100,000 English sentences with audio that are not yet translated into any language.
https://tatoeba.org/en/sentence...filter=exclude 99,527 sentences
Many of these are my sentences.
If, for some reason, you would prefer to avoid my sentences, you can focus on just one member's sentences at a time.
Here are links to several of the native English speakers who have over 100 untranslated sentences that also have audio

Now the number is a little smaller than 99,527!

There's no Chinese of Taiwan option. In Taiwan they use traditional Chinese characters. It was about 100 years ago before Chinese in mainland changed. Now Taiwanese use traditional Chinese still. Not just writing differently and the phrase they use are different as well. For example the computer in mainland China is 計算机 but it's calculator in Taiwan. And in Taiwan computer is 電腦

This is same for British and American English: in Britain "pants" is underwear and "chips" is parallelepipeds-shaped food, in America "pants" means trousers and "chips" means crisps; but both will be lumped under same language in Tatoeba.
Basically if you add a sentence with 計算机, it can have both translations: as 'computer' and as 'calculator'.
Same as in English: if you add sentence with "pants", it can have both translations.
As for the characters, you can add sentences in both scripts. This is true for other languages using different scripts (e.g. Serbian). For Chinese, Tatoeba has automatic conversion: you can write in any language, and it will be converted into other variant. (The conversion is handled by https://github.com/allan-simon/sinoparserd software)

@impersonator. Thanks for the way you described. I might not introduce it properly. In simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese, they are not just the phrase differently. The writing is different too. For me, even I understand the most of simplified Chinese but there's few words that I still don't understand. Some of my friends they don't know any simplified Chinese characters even they are traditional Chinese native speaker. If the native speaker they can't understand simplified Chinese, let alone the foreigners who learn the Chinese.
I just suggested that language if some rare languages are listed on the dictionary. I don't think there's problem with the language which 23 million population use.

> they are not just the phrase differently. The writing is different too.
Yes, but there are other languages are written with different writing, too:
E.g. Serbian: [#11724391] [#11721206]
Or Uzbek: [#11767896] [#9642948]
Or Tatar: [#8086824] [#11832281]
_______
Tatoeba uses ISO 639-3 codes to determine if a language is a separate language or not, which is an international standard.
The problem is: ISO is an international organisation that includes China (Standardization Administration of China is a member of ISO), but not Taiwan. So... The standards issued by ISO will be biased towards Chinese point of view, and will not represent Taiwanese point of view. :(

> "chips" is parallelepipeds-shaped food
That description gave me a good chuckle! Thanks for that.
It brings back memories of my high school days when we would casually throw around words like "rectangular parallelepiped" to describe things and try and keep a straight face.

Anyone knows a way to learn a language apart from Apps & websites?
I normally learn through apps such as DROPS or Duolingo, and websites such as Wikibooks and Wikiversity. But they don't have all of the languages from Tatoeba (ex.: Sumerian), so, where can i learn all languages?
(If in Tatoeba there is a language learning service, then that's great, i will go & use it)

Traditionally people have:
1. Talked with other people.
2. Used textbooks.
3. Taken courses at various country-dependent institutes, like schools and universities.
With a dead language, your best bet is to check universities that teach linguistics, ancient cultures or maybe theology.

Drops and duolingo are just for basic, memrise has some simple courses, too, clozemaster unfortunately is high priced, but then you can still use chatgpt free, and it can create some stories in different languages (maybe not familiar with sumerian, probably don't speak tamazight either), what can be first a better alternative to lingQ, but if you want to do a lot of similar reading in different languages, you won't mind lingQ, then you can find some tales, simple language materials in listening book form with text on youtube or on other sites, then you can find some language exchange partners around the world, there are some free sites, some are a bit mixed-up with 'I cry for have a partner' and 'I genuinely want to learn languages'. Then you have some sites where you can download language books as pdfs. And finally, you can travel abroad and try to learn the language that way.
Sumerian? really? it has nice characters, but you can't really learn that anywhere, just some specific places in university level surroundings
If you in love with the characters, just check out some asian languages, or middle eastern, maybe learn the runic alphabet for fun

So, if I heard it right, if I ever wanted to learn sumerian, I would need to go to an academy? Like a high level one?

You can try to find something on the net, but sure the information is scarce, what is more worrisome, is that the informations probably not as high standard, not so legit you think.
You can try languages for fun, yes, but better connecting the good with the useful.
Immersing yourself in Sumerian maybe useful if you want to be an archeologist.

If I wanted to learn Sumerian I would download a textbook or two, work my way through it, and also find *university* resources on the language, such as dictionaries and grammars hosted by universities. For a lot of dead languages, universities and university-quality scholarly websites host a ton of resources. Sumerian will be more sparse than Latin or Greek, maybe even than Old English, but I can't imagine there are no good free resources hosted by universities.
I would try to translate things from Sumerian that have already been translated, and compare my results.
This would not give me an academic degree in Sumerian, nor the equivalent, but sometimes you have to do the next best thing.

There was a discussion where someone pointed out that shekitten had suspended her account, to which I replied:
"I don't think you can suspend your own account. That was probably done by the admins for some reason."
My message, as well as the original poster's message, was hidden with the following note:
"The content of this message goes against our rules and was therefore hidden. It is displayed only to admins and to the author of the message."
The thread itself:
https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_39897
I can't really see other messages in this thread now, that's why I can quote only my post.
I re-read the rules, and I don't quite understand what rules were the messages against. Is it possible to get some explanation, please?
shekitten is a quality contributor, can she be unsuspended?

Also in my humble opinion Shekitten is a quality contributor. I never noticed the slightest reason to ban her.

Shekitten has some quite extremist sentences. I don't know who banned 'them' and who can ban wall messages. It's a bit upsetting seeing a whole thread banned.
Still, if shekitten did nothing wrong, will be unbanned.

Everyone in this thread or the hidden one will receive a private message from us. If anyone else has any questions, then please contact us privately. Here's the link: https://tatoeba.org/private_mes...TatoebaAdmins.

Oops. Is she suspended? I don't know what happened, but I miss her. I wonder how long will her suspension last. How can she come back?
I left a comment because I hope she will come back soon. Thank you.

I hope so, too.

I'm unsuspended. At some point I may explain the series of misunderstandings on my part that led to this, but for now I'm just really touched by all the support I've received in the last few days and glad to be back.

Welcome back!

@shekitten, I'm glad to hear good news, too. Welcome back!

:o
I didn't know you had been suspended and I don't know what the reason for it might have been, shekitten, but I'm certainly happy you're back!
