Is there anyone that would be willing to help me understand how いかない functions in this sentence. I think I generally understand its purpose, but I'm unfamiliar with いかない being used as a stand-alone, potential verb.
Would 『ジェニーは両親が安全を願う気持ちを無視すること出来なかった』be functionally any different?
Any help would be much appreciated!

@hagersa
I personally think 無視するわけにはいかなかった and 無視することが出来なかった are slightly different.
I think Jenny has to accept her parents' desire for 無視するわけにはいかなかった because she feels a sense of duty.
However, if the sentence is 無視することができなかった (or 無視できなかった), I think there is just a reason but no sense of duty.
