I'm perfectly willing to switch to present progressive — which, I agree, does sound a bit more natural to English ears without markedly deviating from the meaning of the original. But changing "the" to "his" or adding the adverbial qualifier "properly" seems a bit of a stretch to me, as those words were simply not in the original from which I translated this.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to imagine a family physician saying these words to a hepatic surgeon when trying to get her patient onto a wait-list for a liver transplant. Adding the element of gender in speaking about that critically ill patient seems unnecessary.
