Hello,
I am a new user. Thanks for this useful site.
The french translation of this sentence should be more like "J'ai cherché le livre ..."

The French sentence is an indirect translation, so it's okay if it doesn't match this sentence.
When A is a translation of B, and B is a translation of C, then A and C are indirect translations of each other and show in the translations list below direct translations in grey font.
When indirect translation don't match, that means (short of an actual mistake) that the "middle" sentence can be interpreted in two different ways; for example English doesn't differentiate between you-singular/casual (tu) and you-plural/polite (vous), so if one translation uses the informal pronoun and another the formal one, they would be indirect translations of each other but they wouldn't match. This is the reason we're able to add several translations to one sentence, in case they all match it in a given context.
