As it stands it sounds as if each woman had several houses and several husbands.
I checked around and the sentence seems to be okey as it stands in English, although it is ambiguous.
[It could apply to a polyandrous society where women have more than one husband. The Portuguese, Dutch, and Esperanto translations use "woman"in the singular, where the singular stands for the whole class of women.
