That's an alterative, yes. But I would mark it with [lipu ku]. ("student" is "jan pi kama sona" in Ku, but also in general very often used.) The reason I personally avoid structures like jan pi kama sona is that "kama" is a pre-verb/auxiliary verb in "kama sona", and this "copy-paste" from a pre-verb+verb construct into a pi-phrase feels to me like saying something like "jan pi pana e sona" for "teacher". (It's the same copy-paste-pattern to me.)
In other words, I couldn't say with a straight face that when I use "jan pi kama sona", the "kama sona" is a noun phrase and not a pre-verb+verb construct. I couldn't defend it as "person of knowledge-coming", because in fact, I would think and feel and mean: "learning person", which implies that "kama sona" has been quoted 1:1 as the pre-verb+verb structure that it initially was and still is in "jan pi kama sona".
So, I chose "jan pi tomo sona" for "student"/"pupil". (Probably also influenced by German "Schüler" (pupil) and "Schule" (school - tomo sona).) And "mi jan pi tomo sona lon tomo sona ni" becomes "mi jan pi tomo sona ni" for me.
