
Grammatically correct, but sounds rather formal if not outright unnatural (a better description of the register would be appreciated).

Just my guess :
どういう理由で that literally stands for "for what reason" seems more formal to me than plain どうして (why) would have been. Or, as this sentence is part of the japanese/english pairs corpus made by japanese students, it may be an awkward and literal translation from a perfectly natural and unformal japanese sentence.
I'm waiting for a native japanese's better description on the register too !
