Tag auto-completion script turned off?

It looks like the auto-completion script when entering tags on sentences seems to have gone. I'd actually got used to it as well.

Thanks for the ad. It's a pleasure contributing to Tatoeba :-)

Zifre Zifre December 5, 2010 December 5, 2010 at 2:33:12 AM UTC link Permalink

Just and idea:

Tatoeba could integrate a spaced repetition system so that you could study the sentences. You can already do this by exporting a list to Anki, but it's clumsy and doesn't detect changes to the sentences. A built-in system would be able to catch updates and keep your progress associated with your Tatoeba account.

It would be nice if you could add either a sentence or a link to the list to be studied. This way, when you are starting (or for really hard sentences), you could have a translation, but eventually, you would be able to move away from that, which will help you comprehend the sentence more like a native speaker would.

Although I have little experience with PHP, I would be interested in helping code such a system. :-)

For this, I think in a while our project will start to be enough important for that we can directly go ask the guys from anki, to see if it's possible to make something together, as anyway they're also a free project so I think that wouldn't be hard to convince them.

As swift with the API, we can perfeclty imagine an anki plugin which do it this way
* add a special tag [tatoeba:42] , and the plugin will replace it and display the sentence number 42 calling the API (and using a cache system for offline use), so this way you will always have the last up to date version of the sentence, which will be easier and smarter to code than reinventing the wheel

For the export system, it's for creating deck, and even if it's clumsy at least it exists, and which permit you to not have your data "jailed" into tatoeba.

Actually, I think that Anki even has an on-line interface to stacks that you have synced with the server. It would probably be less work to write something for Anki to interface with Tateoba, than writing a new SRS on Tatoeba. Reinventing wheels and all that.

yep they have, that was part of my thinking, once we have decide on a special tag for tatoeba (as they've done [sound: pathforthesound] for playing mp3 and) it should be not too hard to plug it into the api (and as the api server we've made is open source they can even run once and there's a script to sync it once a week with our database, waiting for realtime sync and an official api server)

How is the API structured? What kinds of queries can you make? And how long until it is up and running? :-)

Swift Swift December 5, 2010 December 5, 2010 at 5:09:37 AM UTC link Permalink

With the new database's API, anyone can use information in the Tatoeba corpus this way. No idea when it might be on line, though.

Rather than automatic editing, how about alerting the user and prompting for action to avoid false positives?

vicch vicch December 4, 2010 December 4, 2010 at 4:05:46 PM UTC link Permalink

Hi, I just joined Tatoeba recently and I love it. But sometimes I'm confused about how I could contribute.
For instance, I saw a sentence in french to which there is no english translation. In order to avoid duplication, I searched for sentences in english and found one with the same meaning.
And what do I do next? Since I don't own either of the sentences, should I just post a comment on either side, with a suggestion to link it to the other? In fact the last time I did it, the owner told me he was not a trusted user.
Can anyone teach me what to do in such situation? Thanks.

If you face often this situaton, you can create a public list (browse->browse by list -> create a new list, set as public) call "linking request" or whatever, this way moderators will be able to take a look at it from times to times, so your comments will not be lost :)

I've updated a little the way audio are playing on the website in order to fix the problem for some people (especially on windows) who were not able to listen to them.
For those who are concerned can you tell me if now it works (or if still doesn't) by replying to this message and precise which operating system and browser you use

a page to test http://tatoeba.org/fre/sentences/show/335130
(if it still doesn't work, try first to refresh your browser cache)

I can't remember what they used before (an embed?) but now there's a script that runs a flash applet. My browser used to always complain about a missing plugin.

As far as I know this will be rewritten using the audio tag at some point, presumably with fall-backs on other methods.

sysko sysko December 4, 2010 December 4, 2010 at 5:39:11 PM UTC link Permalink

before we were using a object tag which were embedding a mp3 directly, so that if you browser has in it's configuration a linked software to run .mp3 it will have use it (in linux most of music player are configurated to tell firefox they exist, but it's not the case on windows)

So now the only things that I've changed is using a fallback so now instead of only

1 - try to run the mp3 with a native player
2 - simply display direct link
you have

1 - try to run the mp3 with a native player (doesn't require flash)
2 - try to run the mp3 with a flash player
3 - simply keep displaying the direct link

so I've only added a fallback :)
but yep as the new version will be in html5, so we will have this

1 - try to run mp3 with audio tag
2 - try to run with native player
3 - try to run with flash player
4 - simply display direct link

so that's why it will change nothing for people for which it was already working as I've only added a fallback ^^ (and in this kind of situation I really appreciate the fact we've chosen to respect web standard :) )

On a separate by related note, there is inconsistency between the three views regarding which linked translations of the main sentence can be viewed.

By Tag: Both direct and indirect translations are visible by default. You can't choose to *not* see translations.

By List: By default, translations are not shown. You can choose to see translations using the "Actions" sidebar on the right. However, you can *never* see indirect translations in this view.

By User: No translations are shown. You cannot choose to see translations in this view.

I would propose making the "By User" view more like the "By List" view, and I would propose having both those views show indirect translations. I'm okay with the way "By Tag" is, although perhaps it would be useful to choose not to see translations in that view.
