Please note that this use of に伍している may be considered unnatural in modern Japanese.

「伍する」という言葉は辞書にも載っている様ですが、一般的な日本人には理解できない言葉だと思います。

「伍する」の用法については私も詳しくありませんが、私の認識では「下位だった者が頑張って上位に追いつき、対等に競っている状態」を言うのではないかと思っています。そうだとすれば、「~の一つに数えられる」とは意味が少し違ってきますが、確信はありません。
