Au mot à mot : La foule est le pire des arguments
J'ai lu cette phrase dans un texte de Sénèque (De vita beata).
Je le comprends comme une devise qui pourrait signifier: Ce n'est pas parce que la majorité (ou la foule) pense la même chose qu'elle a raison.
Prenons par exemple la peine de mort en France. Lorsque le président Français François Mitterrand a plaidé pour son abolition, la majorité des Français était contre cette idée.
Je pense à une autre devise, qui pourrait véhiculer une idée similaire : Je ne hurlerai pas avec les loups.

Je doute un peu que ce soit la traduction mot à mot.
Argumentum pessimi turba est -> Preuve du pire est la foule.
La foule est (une) preuve du pire.

Mais je ne peux pas juger le sens.
